Interiors Unleashed is all about unleashing your style, unleashing ideas, unleashing the unexpected...
I love the idea of unleashing an original purpose and using things in an unexpected way, re-purposing! This is not a new or novel idea but the possibilities are endless. Re-purposing is economical and environmentally friendly.
A colleague, Martina of Sablon Interiors in Belgium, commented during a recent "green" kitchen project together that she was seeing antique armoires fitted with shelves and used for china. My mind immediately landed on an unused but very nice television cabinet at our project site.
We re-purposed that monster designer television cabinet for storage in the breakfast area. A plate stand sorted plates in a vertical fashion and an antique child's dining table provided another level in the main television area. The spaces beneath, that previously held a VCR and cable box, were perfect for cups and bowls. Drawers hold odds and ends. Two larger bottom drawers hold place mats, napkins, and table cloths.
This particular TV cabinet had an extra top piece with two doors. Both pieces have great deep storage. The top cabinet held the client's larger items such as pitchers, a bed tray, large platters, an ice bucket and more. This cabinet was so nice that I worked it into the kitchen and breakfast area design. That gives me an idea to use some of my antique furniture in different ways. I down sized and moved my favorite pieces into a much smaller place. My big buffet has large doors on both sides. I can spare one side for files. Hmmm, what else can I do?
